IBM and EBIN team up to deliver IT Architecture course
IBM and the MSc in E-Business and Innovation at Lancaster University programme have teamed up to deliver a new course on ‘Managing IT Architecturre’. This course will be taught by professional IT Architects from IBM with long-running experience in managing and leading large-scale IT projects. This new module is an exciting addition to the EBIN programme; it is an example of the close collaboration with IT industry which the EBIN programme has become known for.
IBM has long been at the forefront of using modern IT Architecture approaches to translate strategy into effective change and to help its clients achieve the right balance between IT efficiency and business innovation (http://www.ibm.com/itsolutions/enterprisearchitecture/). I am thus especially proud that we are able to make the expertise of IBM architects available to our students and provide them with this opportunity to explore IT Architecture as the key link between business and IT.
IT Architecture skills have become a vital resource for innovative organisations and IT Architecture is increasingly turning into a distinct professional discipline with highly lucrative career options. The International Association of Software Architects (IASA – http://www.iasahome.org/web/home/ITarchitecture), a key organization dedicated to fostering IT Architecture as a professional field, describes the importance of IT Architecture as follows: “IT Architecture is quickly showing itself to be the differentiating factor in enterprise systems development by providing faster time to market, lower overall IT costs and greater overall business flexibility. In all cases, architecture has shown itself to be not only required for medium to large companies but a competitive advantage.”
Mike Broomhead, Executive IT Architect at IBM UK, and one of the IBM professionals teaching this course, says the following about the IBM EBIn collaboration:
“The Lancaster MSc in E-Business and Innovation is taking an innovative approach to develop and challenge students about the application of IT for business, which is absolutely consistent with IBM’s vision for the skills required in a modern services-led, technology-savvy economy. IBM will provide experienced guest lectures to deliver an agenda that has been defined with Lancaster University which will bring many years of experience directly to students. We are confident that Lancaster ‘EBIN’ students of all backgrounds will find this a valuable part of their MSc course agenda.”
The new module will be taught for the first time January 2007. I am looking forward to this exciting opportunity and I am sure, our students do as well.
